I recently was working with a new product manager who asked “What resources are available to help me get started?” It occurred to me that she’s probably not the only one out there wondering the same thing.
Here are some resources I know about:
Shameless self-promotion time – you can sign up for My Product Management and Leadership newsletters to get the latest tips “hot off the presses.”
ProductCamp
It’s about the people you know and how they can help you grow. There’s a wonderful group in the DC area – if you’re near DC, check us out.
If you’re not in metro DC, Google for a ProductCamp in your area.
Formal Training –
Ok, so technically most of what these great guys offer is for fee, not for free, but they make a good deal of collateral available for free on their website.
I’m a big fan of www.PragmaticMarketing.com – they have some great resources available for free on line, and those, combined with their excellent training on
- Roadmapping and
- Requirements that work provide an excellent foundation.
Blogs:
More shameless self-promotion – sign up for email delivery of my blog which covers product management (as well as a number of other topics.)
- Raising your Game (My Blog)
- On Product Management
- Software Product Manager
- Always Be Shipping
- Software Product Management
- Strategic Thoughts on Product Marketing
- Launch Clinic
- Spatially Relevant
- Product Beautiful

If anyone has not been looking at lean startup methodology, I highly recommend you take a look at Eric Ries ( http://www.startuplessonslearned.com/ ) and Steve Blank ( http://steveblank.com/ ) … many great things to learn even if you are in an established company.
